In memory of Phillip Jacobus (1934 - 2023)

We are greatly saddened by the passing of Phillip Jacobus, a beloved friend of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Though he might not have thought of himself as one, Phil embodied the definition of a philanthropist. Not only did he help shape the future of West Michigan by offering his time and talent to many non-profit institutions, he and Cherry generously donated their treasure to the causes that were important to them. Through these efforts, Phil planted many trees under whose branches he would never sit, satisfied to know that others would benefit from their shade.

Phil had a successful career in real estate financing at Hartger and Willard Mortgage Association, Inc., eventually retiring after three-and-a-half decades as its president. He was a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan, where he and Cherry met as students. Phil’s home was Grand Rapids, where he deeply connected throughout the community. A few of Phil’s philanthropic ventures include volunteering on the Porter Hills Board of Directors, the Wiseman’s Club in Grand Rapids, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the Camp Henry Board of Directors.

Cherry explained her and Phil’s philanthropic vision, stating, “We have both looked toward the Community Foundation because they are doing the things that are needed currently, and they have the ability to look ahead and see what may be needed, that we will never see, but will be necessary years ahead.” We are honored to accept donations in memory of Phil Jacobus.
